Although there is some political awareness among students, after the age of 20 most Icelandic people focus more on their lifestyle and work and spend free time having a good time rather than getting involved in politics. Many also see political action as unfashionable. Alternatively, if some do get involved, they feel their voices are ignored by the government, and figure whats the use? The group sitting on the grass were typical: some said they had participated in demonstrations against Karahnjukar but it was going ahead anyway so they didnt see the point of further action. Those who stay involved seem to be only the really committed environmentalists but their numbers are limited. Some young people I talked with had never actually been to the highlands wilderness areas, saying it was something they planned to do later in life because its always there. Unfortunately some of it will not be always there if hydro-power projects continue. Iceland 76 |
